Dear Mutti,
Itâs been nearly four months since my last letter and no response from you. But since we are at war, your letter must have been lost on its way. If I didnât know you any better, I would think you are upset with me, but thatâs not the case because I know how much you love me. And after all, I saved you from sheltering those parasites. I still donât understand why you let them hide in our home. They must have somehow brainwashed you to commit that awful crime. Yes, Mutti, for sheltering undesirables in Warsaw, you would have been given the death penalty. Papa said Ravensbrück would put you on the right track so that you can come back to us. I believe him, but it makes me worry to even think how far you are from us. I miss you so much, and there is not a day when I donât think about you.
Papa told me to pack, as I will be leaving for Berlin in five days. He thinks itâs very unsafe for me in Warsaw, and it is supposed to get even worse as those Polish bandits are preparing something big. Well, I have a feeling he is right. Just looking at those dirty streets gives me nausea, and it seems like those filthy animals have changed the way they look at us. Itâs like they are less afraid of the Führer or they are awaiting something. Papa got drunk again last night, and he kept telling me that the Soviets are coming for us. It was just drunk blabber, but still, Iâll be glad to leave in a few days.
Oh, Mutti, you canât even imagine how broken my heart is right now. My Stefan betrayed me.
Yesterday, I planned to surprise him by stopping by his office to take him for lunch, but his secretary informed me that he had left. He didnât say where, but I decided to check out his villa. His black Mercedes was parked near the curb. I still have a key that he gave me a long time ago, so I decided to surprise him, after all. I unlocked the door and slipped inside. But then, I heard laughter and voices that belonged to children. Stefan was sitting on the couch with my friendâs portraitist and a small blonde girl. He was reading something to them in another languageâI think it was Englishâand translating it into Polish. I had no idea he spoke in either of those languages. Beside Stefanâs housekeeper, who was napping in the rocking chair, two more kids played with wooden toys on the divan. But what disgusts me the most is the way Stefan looked at that ugly portraitist.
When she called him Finn, I knew Iâd been right from the very beginning. You see, Mutti, at the very beginning of our relationship, Stefan told me that he has an identical twin brother whose name is Finn. Four months ago, I noticed a change in Stefanâs behavior.
